In today's market, mobile gaming has migrated to smartphones, and casual gamers like simple, easy-to-pick-up-and-put-down games like Angry Birds and Candy Crush. Other turn-offs are the high cost of the Vita and its games, the lack of new games and online and downloadable content, and the bulky size of the device.
Sales in Hong Kong have also been hindered by a poorly executed advertising campaign. Unlike other countries such as the United States and Britain, where TV commercials and mass media marketing are seen frequently and everywhere, Hong Kong is yet to see a single ad outside of the few gaming and computer shopping centres. Sony Computer Entertainment (HK) likes to spend its PR budget on one-off, one-hour mall shows that are tacky sideshows.
Hopefully PS Vita will do better as a peripheral device to the new Playstation 4, to be released at the end of this year.
