The story opens with Hero confronting the 43rd Demon King, who turns out to be a cute, redheaded queen. She appeals to him to join her for the benefit of both humans and demons. Our earnest Hero refuses, but once the "King" explains the war is being stirred up by nobility, politicians, businessmen and military on both sides for the sake of economic and social stability, he agrees to help her find a way that won't lead to either side's annihilation.
The story is inspired by classic fantasy role-playing games, with character names based on their titles or occupation. For example, the male protagonist is called Hero and the female called Demon King with other characters such as Female Knight and Archer.
The anime is based on a series of plays written by Mamare Touno which were first published on the famous Japanese "textboard", or forum, 2channel.
Since its initial posting in 2009, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha has been published as a series of books and several mangas for anthology magazines.
Maoyuu Maou Yuusha contains some intelligent writing and has the potential to be a funny romcom with a nice dose of socio-political satire thrown into the mix.
