The Kid with a Bike is a French film which tells the tale of an 11-year-old boy called Cyril (Thomas Doret). Cyril lives in a foster home and is desperately seeking his father and his bicycle.

One day Cyril bumps into Samantha (Cecile de France), who operates a hair salon. The two start to bond, and he convinces her to let him stay over for weekends. While Cyril sometimes rebels against Samantha, he gradually begins to understand the notion of familial love.

He may be a newcomer, but Doret's performance is excellent. He conveys his emotions very naturally, and successfully portrays a vulnerable and sensitive boy with insecurity issues. With his expressive eyes, his performance of hope and agony draws the audience towards him like a magnet.

The score is particularly worthy of praise: the strings bring out rich emotions: love, hatred, despair and sadness. The wonderful music at times lightens the mood and conveys a sense of hope.

The plot meanwhile is relatively slow, melancholy and cruelly frank. It reveals the bitter reality of abandoned children, and how they are affected.

The Kid with a Bike is a deep and touching film that churns your stomach. It reminds people that pain is a necessary evil which allows one to grow. The film also showcases the strength of the human spirit in those individuals who help random strangers.
