It's understandable considering the sky-high hype around the ensemble flick; but fortunately it's all justified as the film is so enjoyable.
The story starts when Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), director of Shield, an elite peacekeeping unit, assembles an all-star team of superheroes: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).
They have to defeat an army of extraterrestrials led by Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who have opened up a portal to Earth.
Director Joss Whedon does a surprisingly deft job of divvying up screen time among the larger-than-life characters, with each getting their due justice in terms of action scenes and dialogue.
As expected, the film is an all-out onslaught on the senses. There's plenty of repartee, clever one-liners and, of course, battle scenes. The final showdown between good and evil lasts almost half an hour alone.
Yet I was hoping for something darker and edgier than this rather comic bookish result. Of course, interpreting a beloved comic book in a way that pleases everyone is a task worthy of these heroes.
