The Prince is back! Fans of The Prince of Tennis and main character Ryoma Echizen can look forward to a brand new anime series based on the popular manga by Takeshi Konomi.

The aptly titled New Prince of Tennis is based on a manga that was first published in Japanese anthology magazine Jump Square in early 2009. Five volumes of the original manga have been published in Japan so far. Viz Media, which published the English version, released the 42nd and final volume in July. So far, there has been no word of an English translation of the sequel.

The new storyline begins several months after the national tennis tournament which ended the original Prince of Tennis. The Seigaku tennis club has been invited to train at the Under-17 camp, which is well known for its tough training regimen. The nine Seigaku players join more than 40 middle school players to train with high-schoolers. Upon their arrival, the camp director announces that 50 players will be cut immediately if they can't grab a tennis ball. Naturally this leads to the first tennis battle royal.

The show began airing in Japan on January 4, so there might be a bit of a wait before we see it here; but here's hoping that Gundam Age TVB or J2 will begin showing it in the next few weeks. If you want to help speed things along, e-mail, tweet or call your favourite anime network and let them know you want them to show some tennis.
