Marvel movies

With two Marvel comic book movies smashing up cinema screens this summer, and a third on its way, I thought it would be fun to write about my favourite three Marvel movies. Each uses its source material well and has a very good story with lots of cool fight scenes.

First is the movie that started everything, Blade (1998), starring Wesley Snipes as the eponymous half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter. The movie opens with an amazing action sequence that shows Blade wiping out a horde of vampires with flashy swordsmanship and martial arts.

The movie does an excellent job of interpreting the source material and, since Blade isn't that popular with or familiar to comic book fans, there isn't too much to get wrong.

My second favourite Marvel movie didn't make it to the silver screen. Punisher: War Zone (2008), starring Ray Stevenson, is the third attempt at the Punisher - and the best in many ways. Stevenson actually looks like the Punisher of the comics. But the one thing that stops this film short of being excellent is that the portrayal of villain Jigsaw is too similar to DC Comics' Joker.

My third favourite is Iron Man (2008), starring Robert Downey Jnr as the drunken billionaire industrialist Tony Stark. This movie has it all: a great cast, superb story, amazing CGI effects and cool Iron Man armour.

Next week, having hopefully seen Green Lantern, I'll reveal my three least liked Marvel movies.
