Kinako is not your ordinary eight-year-old Labrador retriever. Although she's well known in her native Japan, she became famous for all the wrong reasons. She failed the police dog exam six times, but her determination did not go unnoticed, and she's won a cult following.

Now director Yoshinori Kobayashi brings Kinako's heartwarming story to the big screen in Police Dog Dream.

Ever since she was a child, Kyoko (Kaho) has wanted to follow in her father's (Kenichi Endo) footsteps and become a police dog trainer.

On entering Bamba Police Dog Training School, Kyoko meets Kinako and the two develop a strong bond. Even though Kinako is pure-bred, she does not have the build of police dogs. But Kyoko is determined to train her.

Police Dog Dream rates high on the cutesy, cuddly scale. Dog lovers will definitely enjoy the tender exchanges between Kyoko and Kinako.

The story follows your usual build-up before the final climax, which simply goes back to the opening motif involving Kyoko's father. But it's hardly a revelation, and there's no suspense - you already know the ending, or Kinako's fate.

In case you're wondering, in real life, Kinako passed the dog exam and will begin official dog police duties later this month.
