Fans of the anime series Ookiku Furikabutte can look forward to another season of baseball drama and comedy as Nishiura High School's baseball team take to the field again in Natsu no Taikai-hen.
The previous season ended with the Nishiura team winning their first regional match, causing a huge upset since they were new and making their first appearance in the competition. Although they had no proper coach and barely enough players, their gung-ho spirit made them a dark-horse contender. Playing in the Koshien stadium, where the national games are held, doesn't seem impossible.
In the second season, the boys are getting ready for their next match. Their futures ride on their teamwork and their scaredy-cat pitcher Ren Mihashi. Ren's incredible control allows him to pitch the ball where catcher Abe tells him to. Now Ren must build up his speed and stamina if the team are going to make it to Koshien.
The series, originally a manga created by Asa Higuchi in 2003, won the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for best creative work in 2006, and the Kodansha Manga Award in the general category in 2007. Production is by A-1 Pictures, which also produced Persona: Trinity Soul and Working!
The new season is now airing in Japan, and should soon show on Animax. If you missed the first season, look out for reruns or get hold of the English DVDs released by Funimation.
